Hello everyone! Congratulations on completing your first task: successfully logging in to the MyTeachingHouse.com site!
We are presently developing Generation 2 of the MyTeachingHouse site. It’s a great resource both on the course and after the course (in finding work and keeping up with friends you’ve made during the course). As this site is under development, we’d appreciate any feedback or suggestions that you have.
I have a few more tasks for you to complete—it may take about an hour or two. Please read the instructions below and complete it before next Monday.
Directions: All written answers must be posted on this thread (First Assignment) within the discussion forum in your course group. Since there are many of you, it's important to post only on this thread (click "Reply to This" at the bottom) so that we can keep the forum from getting full and messy-looking. However, if you have any other comments or questions you are welcome to start a new thread.
1. If you haven’t already, edit your profile with your current location, status and photo
2. Browse through our international directory of English language schools (hover over "RESOURCES" in the toolbar at the top of the page and click "SCHOOL DIRECTORY" ). Post the name of a school that you think you might be interested in applying to after the course, and (briefly) why you liked that school.
3. Go to Course Forms and find a word from one of the glossaries that you do not know.
4. Post one idea or recommendation for MyTeachingHouse.com.
5. Post a personal goal related to taking our Teaching House CELTA course.
6. Post a comment about someone else’s comments, for example, “Lizzy, I agree with your comment about the job listings section…” or “Abby, I saw that you wanted to work in Paris. I was thinking about that myself—is it hard to find work in France?” If you're one of the first people to post, come back later with a comment after your peers have caught up.
Good luck and keep coming back to our site!
You can email me at christen@teachinghouse.com with any questions.
Quick question: Is there anyone else commuting from North County Inland? I would love to carpool! Just let me know and we can set up details.
2. The Israel College because it's in Haifa. I'm told it's one of the best and cheapest places to live in Israel. It's going to take me awhile to decipher the Hebrew website. :-)
3. TP Points
4. Under "Resources" it would be great to have a listing of helpful books and materials which may or may not fall under the "links" category.
5. My personal goal is to become fluent in Hebrew and grow in my language teaching abilities so that someday I will be able to teach Hebrew. However, English is my bread and butter and will probably stay that way!
2. Distinction Language Centre, Gdansk, Poland. They seem to have a lot of versatility in their offerings...and they're in Gdansk.
3. Freer Practice
4. I recommend organizing the “job listings” into regions (Asia, Europe,...) for easier perusal.
5. I hope to learn how to teach more than one person at a time!
6. I shall return

2. Al Mawakeb School in Dubai. The Middle East is an area that I am very interested in and I think that Dubai would be a great place to live.
3. I've never heard of Cuisenaire Rods being used for anything other than math.
4. Instead of having to hover over the resources button to access the job listings and school directory, I think it would be helpful to add the links to the resources page itself.
5. Though I have experience teaching other subjects, I have never worked in the ESL field. My goal is to learn new skills so that I can be a more effective teacher.
6. Since there are currently two other replies to this post, I'll reply to both of them :) Nicole: Have you been to Israel before or is it somewhere that you have always wanted to visit? Elise: Your profile says that you worked in Burundi. What an amazing experience! What made you decide to volunteer there?
Hi Meg! I have never been to Israel, although I have a few friends who have spent significant time there. My interest began with the language, actually. I have come to really love Hebrew and hope to pursue it further.
Meg - actually, I have never been to Burundi. I volunteered as a tutor for refugee's from Burundi in Buffalo, New York. A lot of refugees are resettled there and there's a huge need for English language tutoring and assistance with basic things like buying groceries and paying bills. Yes, it was an amazing experience...even though I was only in Buffalo. =)
I noticed you plan to teach in Dubai. It is definitely on my list of places I need to see before I die. Have you spent much time in the Middle East?
I've worked in Burundi and am thinking of moving there in the future! I'm so excited to hear your stories about Burundians in Buffalo! How long ago were these people/family resettled there?
The Burundian family I worked with in Buffalo had just arrived in the U.S. in the fall of 2007 and that is when I began tutoring them. They were a young couple with three kids. I really enjoyed my time with them, but it was also very difficult since I had no previous tutoring experience at the time. Still, we worked out a fun system where they would teach me in Kirundi the same words I taught them in English.
I think you are the first person I have ever met who has been to Burundi! What kind of work were you doing there?
My husband and I have been co-directors of an international community development non profit for the last few years (microfinance, land loans, etc). So that's how we ended up in beautiful Burundi!!
I think your plans to work with Chinese executives sounds like a great idea. Over New Years, I spent time chatting with a friend who had done something similar and it worked out really well for her!
1 - I flew into San Diego last night from TN, and am staying with my daughter in Hillcrest until I move into Studio 819 on Saturday. She's a newlywed, and I chose San Diego so I could see her for a few weeks, but don't want to overstay my welcome with them! :D Status - just quit my job as a hospital nurse last week, and am ready to enter the next stage of my life at 61 years old! It's been a long time since I've had this kind of adventure and up-in-the-air life.
2 - Wow - this will take a while! I'll come back to this one.
3 - Back-chaining. Not exactly a 'word' but the concept is cool: working backwards from the end of a sentence to break it down and focus on meaning, emphasis, and flow.
4 - Will have to explore more before answering this one.
5 - My personal goal is to learn how to teach to others the language that is second-nature to me. I want to feel confident enough to get started, and then gain experience through teaching in another country. One goal I have is to maybe teach English to nurses or nursing students in another country. I think this would be a good use of my nursing experience, and a great way to earn extra money. I hope to make this my 'retirement' career and be able to live outside the US.
6 - @Nicole I have been to Haifa! I am a Baha'i, and our World Center is there, on the side of Mt Carmel. If you go, you will not be able to miss it....beautiful terraced gardens from the bottom of the mountain to the top, with a gold-domed shrine in the middle. It's one of Haifa's most visited spots. I have lots of pics from that visit, and will be glad to show them to you!
@Emily YES, it is easy to become smitten with San Diego! I fell in love with it the first time I visited my daughter here a couple of years ago. I could live here and LOVE it. Maybe after a year abroad.......
Okay - I've looked around a bit and am ready to answer #s 2 and 4.
2 - Apollo Language Schools in Vietnam looks interesting. This school looks like it has a good variety of types of courses it offers, including corporate courses as well as classes for young learners. It also has a branch in Hai Phong, which is beautiful in all the photos I've ever seen!
4 - I recommend cleaning up the download list in the Course Forms section, or making it easier to use.
