In August, I will move to the UAE to teach English to 12th grade girls. In your opinion, what are some books/materials/resources that I simply must pack in my suitcase? I have been told that there are no course books available, so I need to be prepared to teach from my own materials. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Hi Kara! I'm glad to hear that you've found a job -- sounds exciting! As far as things to take... Christen's right, ask about their other resources available at your school.
If you've got some cash to spare (and with so many Border's locations closing right now it might take less cash than normal) you might consider getting one coursebook for each level at the school, i.e. one elementary, one pre-intermediate, etc. Definitely get one that's intended for the age level. I think I've heard some people who use the "Just Right" series speaking highly of it recently, but I've never taught in the UAE before so be sure to look through whichever book you decide on to make sure it's culturally appropriate.
Or, instead of buying coursebooks, you could buy a couple resource or activity books. There are tons of different titles that would be useful, and a lot of them will have activities for various levels.
You can also think about the authentic materials assignments and that types of materials people used for that. Take some menus, a few magazines, a newspaper, some tourist brochures, some DVDs, and stuff like that.
