Here's a very active Thailand jobsboard: http://www.ajarn.com/recruitment/browse_jobs/index.html
Matt - I work in the Office of University Advancement; nothing fancy, but work is work, so I can't complain.
Jeni - Thanks for the suggestion; I'll definitely check it out. How were you able to find the jobs in Singapore/Thailand? Sounds like a fun opportunity, or at least an excuse to escape the snow.
Usamah- have you checked out italki.com. It's a language teaching website where you can give ESL lessons via skype. Because you have a CELTA, you can sign up as a professional instructor and set your own rates. I recently set up a profile but haven't done any teaching yet. I don't think you can make much money on there, but you can list the hours taught as experience. You should check it out!
I applied to quite a few jobs from Sept to Dec but wasn't too aggressive due to the upcoming holidays, and wasn't having any luck at all. Then after Xmas I began applying like crazy, mostly to S Korea and Japan, plus eastern Europe and Turkey. I did end up getting that offer in Korea thru a recruiter, but I really wasn't that excited about it as it was teaching kindergarteners (i.e., babysitting) plus the location stunk, it was way down on the coast, nowhere near Seoul.
Anyhoo, during this time I also spent quite a bit of time conversing with the crowd over at Dave's ESL Cafe, here's what I learned...the ESL job market is terrible (mostly because our economy here still stinks). The days of easily finding a teaching job in Korea are over (it was kinda funny how these Korean recruiters would show interest in me, but as soon as they learned I was "old" they'd disappear), Japan's dried up as well, and Saudi Arabia / Middle East will only consider if you have at least 3 yrs experience, no exceptions so don't even bother applying. The only two places that are "booming" are China and Vietnam. Had nothing else come my way, I probably would've begun applying in China just to get the experience (though I wasn't excited about that, read lots of horror stories about how they don't pay you and steal your passport and the free housing is a roach motel and you can't drink the tap water).
It's kinda infuriating that one week after taking this job, I got an invite to interview with a language center in Prague -- and I said DAMN, why didn't I hear from them a month earlier??? I declined because I had committed to this job, plus I've also got my three cats to think about (sure, my mom was willing to take care of them but I didn't feel right about it). So I'll hang around here for my cats and the money (and no other reason). I just hope when the time comes an opportunity like the one in Prague will be available!
I've read lots of great things about Singapore, Jen, I saw a few jobs posted but they all required the stinking work permit, if you can get in then go for it.
What do you do @NU?
Hey congratulations Jeni on landing those gigs, and to Diane on your new job. I recently started working at Northeastern University, so I am still around. I had a couple interviews for positions in Saudi Arabia back in September, but nothing came of either one. As Diane mentioned, the lack of experience was a major obstacle for the kind of work I was trying to get.
Does anyone have any advice? I still haven't given up on the idea of travelling abroad to teach, but the lack of interview opportunities is rather demoralizing.
@ Diane: well that sounds okay then! I do hope you'll find an opportunity to teach P/T in Boston in the meantime. :)
@ Jeni: Nice one! Say hi to Thailand for me. And in Singapore: don't you dare jay-walk. It sure ain't Boston. ;)
