Miss you too, Evy!!
Everyone,
I need some encouraging words or online resources, whichever you have handy! I am in Brazil and have decided to work independently. :-o That means designing my own courses and/or tutoring sessions. I am intimidated, but my quality of life will be much better here working for myself than for a school.
What do you guys say? Help me with some advice, or even some harsh words, that will make me get off the beach and get a job! (There is no shortage of willing learners here, only my fear getting in the way!)
I hope everyone is doing well!
Missing everyone dearly,
Evy
Greetings from Cincinnati,
I am teaching 3rd grade Social Studies and Science in Spanish at an Immersion school which has an ELL program. I am learning about SIOP lesson planning and Kagan Cooperative learning techniques. I am trying to incorporate CELTA in my teaching. This morning we had teacher training and we did a Jig Saw activity to summarize the important ideas about an article on priorities of lesson planning. When it was my turn, I dropped some CELTA lingo about Receptive Skills and Productive Skills and Accuracy v.s Fluency. My challenge is unique in that I am teaching content through language (not language through content). Here are a few resources that have been shared with me. You might find them useful. Hope to visit Boston in the near future.

Hey All! Thanks for the link Matt, I just signed up. Here's an update for anyone that checks on this group: I am in the final stages of my application to teach through the public school system via EPIK in Korea. I applied through a recruiter called Korvia and I'm glad I did, because the paperwork requirements are strict in so many unpredictable ways. Literally all I am doing now is waiting for their final placement. I requested Busan, the second most populous city in South Korea.
Since I've been back in Dallas, I've been fortunate to find work at a private language school started this year by two veteran English teachers who were tired of working for greedy language school owners. I wish I could say that they have been able to expand my knowledge of the teaching methodology behind CELTA, but sadly I am the one with the most knowledge regarding the CELTA. The other teachers here tend to teach straight from a grammar book and despite my best efforts to reform their teaching styles, it seems that this trend will continue.
Overall, I am really fortunate to be gaining such valuable experience and have a new-found respect for the profession as I’ve learned that it’s not easy teaching and planning for a 4.5 hour class four days a week. As a matter of fact, it was nearly impossible for me to put in the same amount of time lesson planning for my current classes, as I did for the CELTA course. Right now, I am using a heavily modified hybrid teaching style that relies pretty heavily on the textbook for my material (plus games, many games). I try to incorporate as much as I can from what I learned in the CELTA, but to put it bluntly Matthew or Patty would probably have a heart attack if they had to formally examine me. =P
Best of luck to everyone, hopefully we will meet again!
It's a bird, it's a place, it's a MOOC!

^ if you have the time and inclination, recommended! (Even if you don't, really...sign up! Give it a go as far as you can...)
Not ELT, but may be of interest to locals/friends....
Hi Welcome Project friends,
Can you help me get the word out to potential candidates who may be interested in this very important part-time position at The Welcome Project. The Youth Program Coordinator oversees our youth interpreter training and leadership program (LIPS -- the Liaison Interpreters Program of Somerville) as well as other efforts to help young people achieve their aspirations. Priority will be given to candidates with bicultural/bilingual experience who also have skills working on leadership development with youth. The position is 25 hours per week with benefits.
I've attached a PDF of the job description.
The job description is also available at the Welcome Project's website:

Your assistance in helping us find excellent candidates is much appreciated. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

Hello all! Just caught up with some of the posts below. Good stuff! I didn't know Scrivner taught in Kenya...cool! I am ICQ and CCQing away at Kaplan in Harvard Square. I started back with a very mixed level elementary class (my first ever). It was a challenge but also very fun. I also teach Pre-TOEFL with high-intermediate and advanced students. As far as what is new.... well, I saw Dani at Kaplan today!! Also, I gave my notice this week to take off to Thailand/Cambodia/Vietnam at the end of November. I am totally missing Loi Krathong, unfortunately, but am using the next six weeks to finish converting my furniture business into a coop. I hope all is well with everyone. Boston folks, let's get a drink sometime!
Nice! That sounds great Stephanie :)
How's everyone doing? Any updates to share? Hope things are great...
