Hey, I seem to remember telling you about this mailing list which sends stuff like community ESL Classes around Boston. I managed to track down the old introductory e-mail. There's some information in the middle about where to sign up, and the types of posts you will receive. Hope it helps.

Welcome to the AbeBoston@lists.literacytent.org mailing list! ABE
Boston Colleagues,

Welcome ! Here are the ABEBoston statement of purpose, "netiquette"
and guidelines for what kinds of messages can and cannot be posted. I
hope you will read this.

Akira Kamiya ABE Boston List Moderator

=======================================================

The main purposes of the ABE BOSTON list are to provide subscribers
with new channel of communication for information about happenings and
news relevant to the field. This list will be 'For the Field and by
the Field.' Subscribers are encouraged to post information to the list
that they would deem relevant to others working in the Boston Area.

Those invited to this list include all staff from area ABE / Literacy
programs, SABES staff, DOE ACLS staff, and other area ABE practioners
and consultants.

In an effort to reduce unnessary traffic and to reach as broad an
audience as possible it was decided that the ABE BOSTON list is not to
be discussion list, though questions, comments and observations on ABE
work that would offer insights beneficial to others will be
considered. The List Moderator reserves the right to discard any
message that does not fit the guidelines of this list.

A free on-line list of other adult literacy electronic lists, and how
to subscribe to each of them, may be found at
http://www.alri.org/literacylist.html

List "Netiquette", List Guidelines

Electronic lists generally have some basic expectations of users, so
here are ours:

1) Always sign your messages -- in the body of the message - with at
least your name, and your program. If you wish, you can also add your
phone, fax, and Postal address.

2) Before you send a reply, consider if it should go to everyone on
the list or just to the person who sent the message. If you think it
will be of general interest, send it to the list; if not, reply ONLY
to the message originator (the "REPLY TO" address.) Note that merely
hitting REPLY to an ABEBoston post will generate a reply that is
directed to the SENDER only. All posts will not be posted until they
are reviewed by moderator.

3) Please write clearly, simply and directly. This will lead to better
communication. This applies to your subject line and message body.

Please use the following conventions in subject line: Job Postings
add: [job post] event info add: [event]

4) Practitioner job announcements and other posts which are NOT
related to adult literacy should not be posted. Any posts that are of
a purely commercial nature will also not be posted.

5) Messages will not be posted to the list which, in the judgement of
the moderator, include personal attack, sarcasm, or other kinds of
derogatory or disrespectful language. Messages which are intended to
attack or criticize the practices of a specific service provider
(program) or other organization also will not be posted.

Guidelines for What kinds of Messages Should be Posted on the ABE
BOSTON list

The following are all welcome:

1. Job Announcements, and short Grant RFP notices

2. Announcements of good literacy-related resources for teachers,
students and or administrators.

3. Staff and Program Development Activities

4. DOE announcements that are relevant to teachers as well as
administrators.
