My first experience teaching was in college. My good grades produced an invitation to tutor other students in the college’s writing lab. Even though at this point I had received no ESL-specific training, most of my students spoke English as a second language and I found it very gratifying to watch their spoken and written English improve semester by semester. Some years later living in Chicago, I found the time to volunteer my services at Heartland Alliance Human Care Services helping immigrants improve their English skills in terms of daily usage, resume writing, and completing citizenship interviews. In 2013 I traveled to South Korea to teach English at the Daegu Gyeongbuk English Village (DGEV). For two years there I taught seven English classes a day to students of varying ages and competencies. Non-professionally, I'm an adventurous foodie, long-distance cyclist, aspiring writer, occasional carpenter, and resolved smeller of roses.
