Bringing the World Closer

The next important arena in the OET tests is the aspect of speaking. It is a Grade based test. In order to perform well in the test, the test aspirant himself/ herself should initiate the conversation. Some useful tips are:

Begin the Conversation: The Speaking test is a real situation but in the form of an examination. Do not wait for the examiner to begin the conversation. Instead, the test aspirant must put himself/herself in the role that he is adapting (Example, the doctor or patient) and enact it. Firstly, introduce yourself and then move on to the problem faced.

Maintain the Conversation: Do not stay quiet after introducing yourself. The aspirant should always be the initiator of the talk and keep the conversation going. Another important thing to keep in mind is to have a pleasant disposition. Smile and talk in an unbiased manner. This will help the patient to open up to you. If the conversation suddenly ends up in silence, then the aspirant has to bring it back to life.

Asking Questions: Some people may not be ready to speak. In that case, it is the aspirant who should do the talking. There should not be a lull in the conversation. There are two types of questions to be asked. One is the question which gives only Yes or No answers and the other question is the one that makes the patient give descriptive details. Depending on the comfort level of the patient, the aspirant should keep asking details.

Listening Carefully to the Patient: Listening and Speaking always go hand-in-hand. Without listening there is no speaking and without speaking there is no listening. Be watchful about what the patient says, and try to understand what the patient says. The whole focus should be on the communication aspect and not the way of appearance. The patient will always be in a sad mood, but the aspirant should talk and counsel him / her through effective communication. Nervousness of the aspirant should not come to play at all, else the whole conversation would go for a toss.

Language Flexibility: The test aspirant needs to make necessary adjustments in language while speaking to different sections of people. For instance, the style of talking to an 80-year-old man would be different from the style of talking to a teenager.

Unexpected Questions: Certain unexpected questions can be asked by the examiner. For instance, the examiner can shoot questions like, “Do you remember the address of the patient?” Then the Test aspirant can add in a little humor and reply, “Oh No, Not in the very first meeting”! But yes I do remember the same.

Role Play: The best way to practice is to create a role-play and simulate a real-life situation. This consists of Introduction, the content or body and conclusion. In the Introduction, the aspirant has to introduce himself/herself, welcome the patient and present the situation. The body presents the tasks at hand. The conclusion necessarily finds a solution to the same. The golden rule to effective OET Speaking Test is to analyze all the details and respond accordingly!
